Most people think networking means coffee meetings and business cards.

It doesn't.

Real networking is about being human, especially when there's nothing to gain.

Early in my career, my dad and I were leaving the jail late at night after meeting client after client.

On the way out, my dad was joking with a confinement officer.

Food came up.

My dad asked, half-jokingly, "Do you guys like pizza?"

When we got in the car, my dad turned to me and said, "Order a couple large pizzas."

No referrals.

No favors.

No agenda.

We drove back, walked them in, and the officers were genuinely shocked.

Sometimes the best "networking" is just kindness.
